Rituals and games of tug of war

Traditional tug of war rituals and games are practiced throughout rice-growing regions, mostly concentrated in East and Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. The custom of tug-of-war in each place has different gameplay, but always the number of players is divided into two factions, each faction uses the same power to pull the other side to fall on its side. Through rituals and tug-of-war games, people have expressed their wishes for favorable rain, harmonious wind, good crops, warm and happy life, thereby reflecting the unique characteristics of the ecological context, history and culture of the country. In 2015, UNESCO inscribed "Rituals and games of tug-of-war" as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity for 4 provinces of Lao Cai, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh and Hanoi.
