Backstage is one of the fine-dining restaurants recommended by Michelin, located in Capella Hanoi Hotel on Le Phung Hieu Street in the heart of the capital.
Backstage is the intersection between Western architecture and Ha Thanh culinary quintessence. Visit the Backstage, you will be overwhelmed with the glitz of the opera scene showcasing gorgeous costumes but not losing the sophistication of North Vietnamese dishes. Especially, the pho dish is prepared accurately according to the traditional recipe with fresh ingredients, pho has a delicious taste, "standard" Ha Thanh. European dishes such as steak are also served.

It wasn t where I had expected. The lobby of the hotel had a pianist and I expected with a name like Backstage it would be there. It was actually back behind the bar, Backstage.
I was very underdressed, the restaurant suggests "Smart casual" and shorts and a T-shirt is not that. Regardless, I was ushered to a nice table and seated quickly.
Of course, I was offered water and a drink shortly after being seated. Then one of the servers wheeled over a cart that was laden with numerous types of pickles. I asked him to make the choices for me, one spicy and one not. This is the restaurant s amuse bouche and complimentary. A nice start
The bread that was offered with the meal was outstanding! I could have been very satisfied with just that for the meal.
My main was the Stir-fried vermicelli with Mud Crab. It was delectable. A nice mix of flavors and nothing overpowering the whole. Keeping with the Backstage vibe, it was a great melody.
I d love to dine here again, when I am in Hanoi. I can see why Michelin mentions it.

I’m a sucker for designer decor and wanted to lunch at Backstage to check out the highly rated Capella Hotel.
Perhaps a bit erroneously named, the opulent and glitzy interior of the restaurant qualifies it to be centrestage. It was a feast for the eyes!
We were the only patrons for lunch on a Saturday and the staff danced attention on us so they get full marks for impeccable service.
Food was a bit of a hit and miss. The bread basket was outstanding. No complaints about the food in general. Plating was nice. My heritage duck rolls and fish dish were a bit pedestrian. A bit more dramatic flair is required to elevate the culinary standard to match the drama of the decor.
Perhaps the high prices were the cause of the poor patronage but coming from Singapore, lunch at a fancy restaurant priced at US$40-50 per head was still acceptable to us.
I may not dine there again but would recommend it for a one time experience to soak in the ambience, only if you like maximalist dr or style.
