I remember quite clearly my solo dinner at Lamai Garden on the third day of 2023. Snuggled in a quiet lane off West Lake and emanating a sea of calm even as the city celebrated the new year a few days before with fireworks and frenzy down at the old quarter, the restaurant should be on the radar of every Michelin inspector and Asia’s 50 Best judge. Understated, elegant and graceful, the meal was very pleasing especially Jardin de Lamai - the uplifting salad featuring incisive flavours of fresh greens and sautéed onions, and a most heartwarming chicken ginger leaf soup. Perhaps a downside could be the absence of red meat which could have paired with the claypot rice cooked in hay, a specialty of Hue. This was saved by the outstanding grilled grouper with robust green chilli, but was hoping for a crustacean to complete the excellent meal! Highly recommended.
