The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the Asia-Pacific region has just recognized Lang Son Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark on September 8, 2024.

Lang Son Geopark was established in 2021 with a diverse and rich geological heritage system . Spread over a large territory of 4,849 km2, spread across 8 districts and cities of Lang Son province, Lang Son Geopark is one of the largest geoparks in Vietnam.

Immerse yourself in the breathtaking natural heritage of Lang Son Geopark, a unique territory in Vietnam – a testament to the incredible evolution of life over the past 500 million years . There are fossils that show that Lang Son used to be a sea area. This awe-inspiring geopark includes  several  biodiversity reserves, with rich flora and fauna, especially with regard to karst (limestone) and non-karst (other rocks) features.

Another outstanding feature of the Geopark is the primeval forest of crushed timber trees on limestone mountains in Dong Dang village, Bac Quynh commune, Bac Son district. The forest has been preserved for hundreds of years not only contributing to stabilizing slopes, mitigating geological disasters and protecting water sources but also has a strong spiritual meaning for the local people way.

The limestone-free areas of Lang Son Geopark are famous for the traditional anise cultivation and distillation of anise essential oil. Anise trees are usually planted by sowing seeds in February-March, harvesting after about 5-10 years, twice a year in July-August and March-April. Anise is harvested and then distilled for about 3-5 days depending on whether it is fresh or dried. Anise and essential oils are used for many different purposes such as seasoning dishes , making medicines, etc.
