'Surreal' hanging lake in Thung cave

Translated by Bing
The "hanging" lake suspended at Thung cave found in early May has a "surreal" beauty, which will be exploited for tourism and tours in Thoong valley this year.

In early May, Jungle Boss Tours, an adventure travel company that is exclusively operating some cave exploration tours in Quang Binh, announced that it found a mysterious lake located in the sub-branch of Hung cave, in the Thoong valley (hung Thoong) located in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. The hanging lake was named Suspended Lake. Le Luu Dung, director of the company, said the expedition team stumbled upon the lake during a regular inspection of the safety system and underground river level inspection in Thung cave this summer.

The suspended lake is located about 15 m above the water level of the main tributary, the naked eye looks like it is suspended from the cave wall. This lake is formed quite specially by the system of stalactite walls surrounded by stalactite columns protruding as if floating on the water, bringing a "surreal" beauty.

About a week after the discovery of the lake, the expedition team returned and found that the lake level dropped by 2 m. Dung said that the lake level has now recovered but the cause of the receding water has not been determined. Experts suspect that the water in the lake penetrates through the limestone formations and flows into the underground river in Hung cave. As the water level receded, the lake revealed huge blocks of stalactites (pictured) in the shape of a dome. "On June 6, the expedition is expected to take a closer survey of this lake," Dung said.

According to Mr. Dung, discovering Suspended Lake in Thung cave "is a blessing in the process of exploiting adventure tourism", and at the same time gives visitors new experiences in the journey to explore caves in Quang Binh. Every year, Quang Binh always has new discoveries about caves as well as the ecosystem inside, further strengthening the position of the "cave kingdom" of Quang Binh.

Suspended Lake is considered a "specialty" of Thung cave because this cave has countless giant calcium lakes with different depths. Suspended Lake is one of the calcium lakes created during the formation of the cave, which took place from 3 to 5 million years. The depth of the lake is estimated at 7-8 m. Inside Thung cave, there are also many deep lakes that do not see the bottom with jade green water color when shining a flashlight. Thung Cave is also the place to collect water from the upper Doong region and pour into Hung Thoong stream then flow underground to Tra Ang cave.

Thung Cave is considered by cave experts to be special and unique compared to other caves in Quang Binh. In addition to cave formations and cave structures that occur due to the erosion of water through the limestone mountain strata, Thung Cave is a long water cave with many underground rivers flowing underneath. The geological process also created for Thung cave a relatively large sinkhole in the middle of the cave.

Hung Thoong expedition tours are allowed by the People's Committee of Quang Binh province to put into operation from the beginning of 2023. The chain of cave systems in Thoong valley includes Round cave, Hung cave, Hung cave, Hung Thoong stream, Ma Da lake. Cave exploration programs are designed with 3 days and 2 nights routes with different difficulties.

The tour to explore the caves in hung Thoong is open to guests from 15 years old and above, no more than 20 people per group, is operated every month of the year, except on stormy or flood days. At the request of the Provincial People's Committee, the management and exploitation unit must monitor the weather to ensure safety, arrange a reasonable tour route, not duplicate and bring the best experience.
