Bear rescue in Ninh Binh

Translated by Bing
If you're looking for something different to do when you're in Ninh Binh, we recommend Ninh Binh Bear Sanctuary. You will have a super touching experience visiting and hearing how the bears are rescued and rehabilitated

Ninh Binh Bear Conservation Facility is a safe home for 40 horse bears. These individuals were rescued from private farms and bear farms for bile throughout Vietnam.

The Ninh Binh Bear Sanctuary was established by FOUR PAWS, a global animal welfare organization for animals directly affected by humans through publicity of the pain that animals suffer, rescue and protect animals in need of help. FOUR PAWS strives towards a world where humans treat animals with respect, empathy and understanding.

Bears upon arrival at the Sanctuary are quarantined for 21 days. During this time, bears continue to be examined and treated for diseases and then put in 1 of 3 bear houses at Ninh Binh Bear Conservation Facility. The three bear houses are all close to carefully fenced semi-wild areas. When in the new environment, the bears will gradually get used to the commands of the officers and care staff and integrate into semi-wild areas.

Each bear is cared for and has its own story. The Mochi bear cub was rescued in May 2020, after being illegally sold by wildlife traffickers on the Laos border. A few months later, the bear cubs, Nikko and Nara, were also rescued. Currently, the three bear friends are living happily together at the Facility. Freddie was discovered while being sedated and crammed into a tiny cage in the back seat of a taxi in December 2019. Vietnamese authorities responded quickly and confiscated Freddie. In April 2018, Binh Yen was rescued along with May – marking the end of bear bile farming in Ninh Binh province. Despite being overweight, her nature is calm and she is now living peacefully with Misa the bear.

Not only rescuing and caring for bears, since 2019, Ninh Binh Bear Sanctuary has put into testing and implementing a model of linking bear protection with sustainable tourism development. Experiencing the model, visitors can visit and witness the outdoor life of the bears from the 250-meter-long skywalk tour route. In particular, visitors will have a very meaningful time when experiencing an interactive exhibition about bears.

The exhibition consists of 3 parts corresponding to 3 huts.

Hut 1 with the name: "Hello this is a bear" introduces information about eight species of bears in the world through huge book pages.

Hut 2: "The world of 1 square meters" takes visitors to the life story of bears who have been kept captive for many years for humans to exploit honey. At the same time, visitors will understand the bear rescue process of the Ninh Binh Bear Sanctuary here.

Hut No. 3 with the name: "Happy Bears" will give visitors a witty experience of watching the postures of lying down, sitting and playing of bears at the conservation facility

In addition, to meet the needs of groups of visitors who wish to learn more about bear life and the work of bear caregivers, Ninh Binh Bear Sanctuary offers guided tours in the internal area on Thursdays, Saturday and Sunday every week.

Ninh Binh Bear Conservation Facility has participated in the tourism map as an attractive destination for wildlife rescue and protection.

Along with humanitarian rescue activities, the facility operates a sustainable tourism model that combines behavior change education through messages such as "Treat animals with respect, sympathy and understanding" and "Say no to wildlife products" or "Every small action will contribute to creating a big effect in protection nature and the environment."

The continuous efforts of Ninh Binh Bear Conservation Facility in developing experiential tourism products have contributed to spreading the message of calling for raising awareness of wildlife protection to the community.
