Weekend wading in streams, eating village rice in Xom Ke, Hoa Binh

Translated by Bing
Ké hamlet belongs to Hien Luong commune, Da Bac district, a highland district of Hoa Binh province, located close to the bed of the Da river lake. It is about 90 km from Hanoi, so this destination is very suitable for weekends to escape the heat, recharge energy with nature, mountains and forests.

Move

Starting from the center of Hanoi to Hoa Binh, there are two directions or Hoa Lac direction, through the Vietnam Ethnic Culture and Tourism Village, turn to Hoa Lac - Hoa Binh highway or in the direction of Ha Dong - Xuan Mai to Hoa Binh.

From Hoa Binh city, there are also two ways to go to Ke village. One is to move by road along provincial road 433, to Da Bac town, turn left and go about 8 km further along the winding road along the lake. Or go by waterway from Thung Nai port, after an hour of floating on the lake, combined with watching the peaceful lake scenery at the "floating islands" of the lots, then dock on the shore and continue to walk for a few hundred meters on the green grass to reach the center of the village.

Taking a total distance of about 90 km by road will take 2 - 2.5 hours to travel. If you save time, you can take a self-driving car or motorbike from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon, to enjoy a night sleeping in a stilt house without being too tired because of a lot of travel.

Accommodation

Ké hamlet has more than 90 households, mainly Muong people, with cultural features from the food and lifestyle that are almost original. Currently, there are only a few households in the village doing community tourism, turning the family's stilt house into a homestay to welcome guests. Some homestays that are welcoming guests in Ké hamlet are Sac Luyen, Huu Thao, Sanh Thuan, with room rates from only 100,000 VND/night.

Have fun

While the uncomfortable heat in Hanoi at night is still above 30 degrees Celsius, in Da Bac, the surrounding mountains, hills and grass make the night temperature about 24-25 degrees Celsius, the highest during the day is only 30-31 degrees Celsius, which is very comfortable. Not only that, the sky of Da Bac is fresh and quiet, you can see the stars with the naked eye and listen to the rustling insects in the garden.

The next morning you will wake up to the sound of chickens crowing and the smoke of the early kitchen of the people. After breakfast, the owner of the homestay in Ke hamlet will introduce you to interesting forms of experience such as walking, cycling through the trails to explore the village, wading and bathing in cool streams, picnicking on the green grass along the Da River lake, kayaking on the lake, rafting, etc.

In addition, the stream of Ké village is also a summer tourist attraction, the clear spring flowing from the high mountains creeps through the village and then flows into the lake bed of the Da River. Many young people or families from Hanoi come here on weekends to unwind by bathing in the stream and enjoy a barbecue meal right at the camp next to the stream. Adults can relax in the middle of the green forest, enjoy specialties, children can wave by the clear stream, learn about natural plants, see things that are impossible in the city.

Eating

Ké hamlet also has many products, especially fish, shrimp (Da River lake), chickens, ducks that can be easily cultivated and caught and processed into specialties such as chicken, grilled fish, steamed fish, barbs, banana braised rice, pork, buffalo meat, mistletoe, spinach, wild bamboo shoots...

The homestays in the village are very dedicated to serving guests, whether you order rice on the spot or ask to bring it to the shack by the stream, it will be met. Rice is often laid out in the style of a leaf of the Muong people, not using dishes to store each dish, but all of them are laid out on a mat, lined with clean banana leaves. A meal will be complete from fish, meat to boiled, stir-fried or pickled vegetables served with many fresh herbs. The price for a meal for one person is about 200,000 VND.
