Mahatup Pagoda is a pagoda with architecture that blends Vietnamese and Cambodian cultures in Soc Trang province. The pagoda is also called Serây tê chô mahatúp, which in Khmer means created by blessings. Originally the oldest temple in Soc Trang, the pagoda was built 440 years ago (in 1569) and despite experiencing many ups and downs in history, even burned down the main hall in 2008, after being restored and restored as it was and is still a popular tourist destination.
The architectural complex of the Mahatup Pagoda is nestled in a large campus planted with many ancient star and oil trees, adding to the ancient look. Mahatup Pagoda architecture is unique by its yellow-orange tones typical of Khmer culture. The roof of the temple is intricately carved with the Naga serpent symbol and on each supporting pillar is attached a statue of the fairy Kemnar with her hands folded in front of her chest, as if welcoming visitors.
It is home to thousands of bats, including those with a meter-long wingspan, that live in flocks and dangle like fruit from branches. That is also the reason why folk call this ancient temple the Bat Pagoda.
