Hoang A Chiang Mansion is located in the center of Bac Ha town with a total area of about 10,000m2, surrounded by many luxuriant trees and houses. It was built more than 100 years ago, between 1914 and 1921. This is the residence and work of the father and son of Hoang Yen Tchao, Hoang A Chiang (Tay ethnic group) - the Turks of the border region before 1945.
The Tay people have a custom of naming the house after the child who lived with his parents as an adult. Therefore, this building is called "Hoang A Chiang Mansion". It is now one of the attractions of "White Plateau".
The architecture was kept almost intact after a hundred years. According to historical records, the process of preparing and building this building was very elaborate. First, Huang Yan Tchao invited a good geographer from China to find the best place and location in the region. The chosen site is located on a wide hill. The mansion faces southeast, with its back to the mountain, with a stream in front.
Not only has a prime location, the architecture of Hoang A Chiang Ancient Mansion also makes traveller cannot help but be amazed by the smooth and delicate combination between the two Eurasian architectures, showing the clear East-West cultural exchange. The project was jointly designed and supervised by two architects from France and China.
Over time, the project has imprinted the traces of years with moss-clinging walls and brick yards but still retains the main design system including: columns, roofs embossed with many grape leaf string motifs, laurel patterns symbolizing prosperity, warmth and happiness. The roof is roofed with yin-yang tiles. The arched doors and staircases are bow-shaped, giving the impression of innovation and superiority.
The mansion has a closed rectangular layout with a total of 36 rooms, behind which there is an escape tunnel system. The 2-storey rows of houses in the left and right wings of the mansion are now places to display and sell souvenirs and handicrafts.
Here visitors must buy entrance tickets for 20,000 VND / person. At the entrance, there is a horse riding rental service to take pictures for 30,000 VND / time.
Ms. Thu Ha (tourist from Hanoi) said: "I have known the place to visit the "Cat King" Mansion for a long time but this is the first time to come. I was impressed by the architecture and the historical breath of the building. Admission is also very cheap. The interior space is suitable for virtual live photography, feeling like in the European sky. But the galleries are still vacant, localities should take advantage of them to optimize exploitation travel of this place".
Alex and his wife (Portuguese tourist) shared: "We came here for a vacation, introduced by the guide to visit the mansion. I find the architecture very beautiful, in a classic Asian-European way. We went for a walk, took pictures and bought some souvenirs."
Hoang A Chiang ancient mansion is a place to mark a part of the life of people in Bac Ha white plateau in the first half of the 20th century. With unique values, on 11/6/1999, the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) decided to recognize Hoang A Chiang Ancient Mansion as a National Relic.
