The Cafe balcony still retains the nostalgic atmosphere of Hanoi in the 1930s, when the lifestyle of Trang An people (the old name of Hanoi people) reflected both the novelty and innovation of French culture mixed with the long-standing rich traditions of Vietnam.
The walls have been stained for nearly a century; antique wooden tables and chairs, old picture frames, faded yellowed paper books, trees outside and small, old, pretty decorations inside, along with French music from the 1920s to 1940s echoing from the walls, all create a unique atmosphere at the Balcony. The café has become a place for Hanoi people to review cozy and intimate memories of Hanoi's past, although most of its customers were born long after the villa was built.
The balcony has a lot to tell people about themselves as well as the ups and downs of Hanoi and the people here. At one time, the entire building was the roof for seven different households.
Coffee on the Balcony Cafe is delicious. They serve all kinds of different coffees – Italian style, Vietnamese style, and their own creations. I recommend trying one of their signature dishes: "coconut milk coffee" (coconut milk coffee) or "egg coffee" (egg coffee, a Hanoi specialty). Of course, if you want something more familiar, all typical espressos are available, as well as classic Vietnamese iced black coffee and iced milk coffee (sweet iced coffee with condensed milk). On a hot summer day, the most refreshing option to cool you down is "sticky leaf coconut" (pandan leaf coconut).
The balcony also operates as a restaurant, serving a variety of dishes. The quality is good and the portions are very generous. The best offer is the fixed menu for small groups, but if you're going there alone, a single meal would be perfect for a short stop while exploring the city. Don't forget to take a tour around the villa before choosing the best seat. The spacious balcony next to the flower shop on the 2nd floor is perfect for a couple or a group of friends looking for some privacy.
