As the title suggests, we didn t get off to the best of starts. We arrived at the Spice House around 11.30am and was greeted by one of the guys working there who was pleasant and explained the guest house and provided recommendations for Mirissa. We were informed that we couldn t check in yet as people were still checking out (Which we knew would be the case and we just wanted to store our bags somewhere) but he said we could sit and use the pool and facilities while we waited. I asked where we could get changed into our swimwear which he showed us and then left us to it. So.. I go and grab our swimmers and ask another employee if by chance they had some towels we could use by the pool while we wait. This is where it went downhill as Phil s wife Wathsala was listening to the conversation and interrupted and asked what I wanted. Again I asked for towels, which is when she told me off, refused towels and said that we could not use the pool as we had not checked in yet. OK, I explained that the gentleman earlier had just said we could... response, he doesn t know what he is talking about. There are too many people at the pool for us to use and only checked in guests can use it. So we walk to the pool... no one is in it and there are a whole 4 people lying in chairs. I was honestly shocked by her response and my initial reaction was to tell her to forget about about our 4 night booking and request a refund. Wathsala walked away and left me standing by the pool with no towels and my swimmers in my hands not sure what to do. So we swam without towels. Anyway, we got over the abrupt and completely unnecessary confrontation and did stay. I acknowledge that she was busy and clearly stressed by the number of check outs and check in s that day... but that is not my fault and never should it be aimed towards your guests.
Now to the rest of the stay. We stayed in Lemongrass which was lovely, particularly the hammock and bench seating outside that you can use to lie down and watch the monkeys and bird life. The pool was a very welcoming temperature and perfect for a gentle and relaxing swim. We had dinner here one night which was delicious and very good value. Breakfast was plentiful and Wathsala did ensure I had enough to eat being gluten free and supplied other breakfast options that were traditional and naturally GF which was appreciated. The house is off the main road but far enough back so that it is very quiet and secluded. You do have to walk along the very busy main road to get to the beach or shops which can be a little hair raising, but by the looks of it, it is the same irrelevant of where you stay in Mirissa.
So all in all, we did enjoy our stay.
